Mirela Cufurovic
Mirela began her art career in late 2012. She briefly attended the National Art School in Sydney in 2012 where she did an art theory course, and has been recognised for her art talent by UNHCR. She completed a Mixed Media course run by Australian artist Laura Horn in 2020. She specialises in watercolour paintings and drawings and gains most of her inspiration from prominent contemporary artists such as Agnes Cecile, Amani Haydar, Polina Bright, Laura Horn and CJ Henry. While her art practice is constantly evolving, Mirela attempts to create artworks that are not only unique and personalised, but that also have a story to tell. She intends to connect her art through the beauty she finds in her faith, but also intends to build connections with others who have experienced trauma as a result of war and works to encourage conversations on minority identities. Becoming a new mother to a little girl, Mirela also loves all things nursery inspired and paints artworks that help bring nursery rooms to life. Mirela is also an academic, historian, and upcoming author. She specialises in Balkan history, Australian Muslim identity and history.
Mirela has won the UNHCR World Refugee Day Art Competition 2012. She was a finalist for the Australian Muslim Artists Art Prize 2019. She was also a featured artist for the HOME exhibition at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre 2020.
