Soraya Abidin
Soraya Abidin is a contemporary Textiles artist from Sydney. Her art practice explores the notion of Biculturalism through commonalties of beading, embroidery and quilt crafts practiced by her Malay and Australian ancestors.
Soraya is a self-taught artist, her work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally. Recent works crisscross her bicultural heritage, through a ‘switch’ in the cultural frame of craft techniques and materials. She is duty-bound in the pairing and stylistic clash of the two cultures. Oversized wall appliqués are created from vintage Asian silks and Peranakan glass beads collected in Malaysia and bequeathed quilting sources in Australia.
Currently, Soraya is exhibiting works in Tension(s) 2020, Tamworth Textile Triennial, Australian Muslim Awards 202 1 at the Islamic Museum Australia and is currently working towards an upcoming exhibition at the Australian Design Centre in 2022.
